Meet Fearless Fergie: A Chihuahua Agility Training Champion

Known as “Fearless Fergie” by her fans, this little Chihuahua agility training champion has already achieved so much in a relatively short time. What began as a brief meeting on the street with her future Mom quickly led to a lifetime of adventures.

She’s since aced obedience classes, won agility competitions, and has even advanced in scent work. It seems there’s nothing this brave, tail-wagging little girl can’t do. Her owner, Julie Wheeler, says she’s “very proud of Fergie and […] still cannot quite believe it” herself. She packs a big personality, and her unique, inspirational journey is garnering impressive social media attention.

She may be one of the tiniest Chihuahua agility training competition dogs out there, but her size doesn’t seem to faze her. With each success, Fergie proves that size doesn’t limit potential in Chihuahua agility training.

A Fortuitous Encounter and the Start of Chihuahua Agility Training

In a chance encounter, Julie met Fergie while out walking one day when the Chihuahua was 8 months old. A couple of weeks after their meeting, Julie received a surprise call from the woman who’d been walking her—asking if she’d like to have her. She wasn’t sure how she’d manage a new pup, but she’d had a rescue dog before and was devastated when her Jack Russell passed away.

She took Fergie in, but it was such a whirlwind that she waited two weeks to name her. Julie tells us she quickly enrolled her new pup in “a weekly 30-minute obedience training class.” She knew early socialization was important, and that basic commands such as “recall, stop, and down” were vital for the dog’s safety.

Exceeding Expectations: Fergie’s Journey in Dog Training

Training small dogs isn’t always easy, but Fergie surpassed her expectations in the classes, picking things up quickly. They continued to practice at home and “took part in the Good Citizen Dog Training Schemes,” Julie says.

The process allowed the pair to further bond, and Julie got to learn “what Fergie liked and disliked” based on her body language. Small obstacle jumps during obedience classes then turned into agility sports training on Saturday mornings at a club Julie found when Fergie was two and a half.

Over the past few years, she has had six first-place wins and two second-place finishes in grade 1 agility races. Her success in a five-day Kennel Club competition earned her a promotion to grade 2 agility courses. And if there’s ever a time Julie senses her athletic Chihuahua doesn’t want to continue—which she says is rare—they take a break. She keeps their training goals small and realistic, perfectly in tune with the abilities of her canine companion.

The Agility and Obedience Training Achievements of a Tiny Chihuahua

Although agility has been her focus, Fergie competes in scent training with the National Nosework Association and was recently promoted two grades. Her obedience training has paid off, as she has “achieved Good Citizen awards up to platinum level 5,” Julie says.

During these events, Fergie’s tail wags furiously as she amazes onlookers with her strength and courage. It takes dedication and hard work for agility competition dogs to do what they do. When there’s downtime, they’ll take daily two-to-three-mile walks to keep Fergie’s energy up. At one point, the sound of a nearby gunshot frightened the little champion while she was training on a seesaw.

To help her recover, Julie used dog training tips learned from a behavior course, bringing her back to normal within a few months.

Fearless Fergie: From Agility Courses to Social Media Fame

Julie recounts a special memory of running alongside her furry friend on a level 5 agility course while training: “The owner of the field was riding his tractor, the sun was shining, and it was just me and Fergie […]. We were both in sync and we knew exactly where each other were and what we needed. The wind blew across our faces as we crossed the line. YES, Fergie, you did it!” She says this was a clear bonding moment and will “always remember picking Fergie up, hugging her, and praising her.” This win, of course, was rewarded with her favorite sausage.

As a result of her fascinating adventures, Fergie has become quite the dog influencer, with over 92k followers on Instagram alone. She even made an appearance in Black Doves, a Netflix thriller released last year. For an apple-head Chihuahua, she defies physical expectations, and her inspiration is contagious.

As one fan comments, “Every tiny dog deserves the opportunity to be fulfilled and balanced like this! The confidence is awesome.”

Another writes, “Chis are too often treated like they need to be sheltered […] because of their size. They also need to be fulfilled […], so they learn how to work through their anxiety.”

It’s clear Fergie has become a confident Chihuahua through dedicated training and a strong bond with her owner, earning her the memorable nickname. As Julie says, Fearless Fergie is “small and mighty with a huge heart;” friendly to people and their pets. Fergie will continue to sprint through agility courses for the true rewards waiting on the other end—a snuggle with her mom, and her favorite treats.
